Happy Valentine’s Day!! Maybe it’s just because I’m delirious from shoveling 574 cubic yards of snow this morning, but I thought I’d ponder – why love? As a wedding photographer, today means that there will be many young couples out there suddenly realizing that they need my services! Questions will be popped, rings will be proffered (and tearily accepted), congratulations will be wished, wedding plans will be made, photography will be required! Love reigns.
But why?
Today is all about giving flowers, cards, chocolate, trips to the spa, vacations, diamonds and jewelry all to show love. But these things aren’t (or shouldn’t be) the reason we feel love for someone else. So why? Where does it come from? Not necessarily why we love someone specifically, there can be many reasons why we love another person – some of them completely indescribable. But why do we have the feeling at all?
There are those that think it’s just a chemical accident that’s evolved in our species that assists in the mating process. How romantic! Isn’t real love more than that? Of course, but why do we feel it? Why are we allowed to experience this amazing, giddy, uplifting, you-complete-me kind of feeling towards another person? Why is it capable of filling us up to overflowing? Why does it cause us to overlook shortcomings, and see possibility? Why does it give us that sense that no matter what happens we can commit our life to someone else? Why do we desire it so very much? Why does it feel so true?
Maybe it’s just a gift – a gift from a God who loves us very much.
Happy Valentine’s Day!
